BERLIN, Ohio - The second day of the Classic in the Country kept delivering top-notch girls' basketball during the holiday weekend for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

Portsmouth  60  Granville  33

Amy Hughes and the Portsmouth Trojans played as expected in their game against Granville; the reigning Division V state champions overpowered Granville. "We just working for the state championship again, because were hungry again," said Woods.

"We played with a lot of toughness, a lot of energy," Hughes elaborated.

Junior Keke Woods would get going early, scoring eight of the 13 first-quarter points as they slowly began to pick up steam. Neither team scored until Granville hit a 3-pointer by Sophia Hall at the 5:54 mark of the quarter.

At the 4:32 mark remaining in the period, Sienna Allen from Portsmouth scored a layup, which accounted for their initial points, allowing them to maintain a 13-7 lead as the quarter ended.

Woods would continue to dominate the game, and their defense would prove to be too much as they ended the first half 33-13. Not much offense from Granville as they only scored six points in the second quarter. "The defense was really spectacular," Hughes said. "We put together a really, really good first half."

In the final moments of the game, it was all about the Trojans and Keke Woods, who ended up scoring 32 points. Sienna Allen, who is committed to Ohio University, also helped out by adding 11 points.

Granville's Sophia Hall would end with 14 points.

Portsmouth moves to 11-2 overall on the season and 8-1 in conference play and will challenge Cincinnati Sycamore next, as for Granville, they will drop to 12-1 and 6-0 in their conference and will try to bounce back against Anthony Wayne.

Olmstead Falls  52  Winton Woods  40

Winton Woods was expected to be the slight favorite going into this game, but their performance didn't show it, as the Olmstead Falls defense caused them a lot of trouble for most of the game.

Enough defense to hold the talented sophomore Strawberry Blankumsee to no points in the first quarter and half of the second, scoring with 5:16 left in the half.

It was just an all-around team effort from Olmstead Falls, with Grace Largent and Emma Schaefer leading the team with 12 and 14 points to end the game.

"Our kids really buy into sacrifice," said Eaton. "We tried to show as many shirts as we could when they started to drive it, and the kids did a really good job being alert and then rebound when we needed to."

Winton Woods managed to come within eight points in the third quarter, with 3:26 remaining. But that would not prevent Olmstead Falls from getting much-needed stops by cutting off the driving lanes. "We knew they could really drive the basketball; they are elite drivers and finishers," said Eaton.

Blankumsee would put together two solid quarters in the second and third but again held scoreless in the fourth quarter, ending the game with 13 points.

Nobody else scored in double digits for Winton Woods.

They ended the game shooting 15 for 45 and outrebounding Walnut Hills 33 to 23; it just was not Winton Woods' day, falling to 11-3 on the season and setting up a matchup with Walnut Hills. Olmstead Falls will face Elyria next on the schedule as they improve to 11-4.

There were two shot clock violations in this game.

Fairmont Kettering  56  West Clermont  37

Fairmont kicked things off with a lot of energy, led by Kaylah Thornton. They quickly went on a 9-0 run early in the first quarter, with 6:02 left in the period.

During that time, she scored nine of her total 20 points. "Our defense, we started off very strong, we executed every play, I just think our defense when we start off strong it leads us to a win, and I'm very happy with our teammates and coaches," said Thornton.

Leading 24-9 in the second quarter showed how tough their defense was, "Defense is kind of our mentality, just causing issues," said Finn.

Maddie Fender, a starter, found her rhythm late in the second quarter for West Clermont, scoring eight consecutive points to bring the team within nine points. But never scored in the second half.

By the end of the third quarter, Fairmont had an 18-point lead and never looked back, continuing to hold the lead over the course of the game.

Thornton and Janiyah Hargrove were too much for West Clermont to contain, sending West Clermont home with just their second loss on the season to set up a matchup with Tecumseh. Fairmont Kettering will play Western Reserve Academy while they stay undefeated at 14-0.

There was one shot clock violation in this game.
