Columbus may have lost steam after losing to a squad that had also only won once before today in a pivotal game, as the season draws to a halfway point and the postseason picture becomes more apparent.
After this loss, they sit just above the Birmingham Stallions in the standings. Next to last place.
"When all three phases don't play together, it hurt us," said Ginn Jr. "We know what we did, we see what we doing."
With five players touching the ball and Zaquandre White earning 39 yards on ten carries, they ran the ball fairly effectively, totaling 121 yards.
However, the issue appears to stem from the inability to advance the ball during crucial moments when securing first downs was essential, as they managed to convert 14 compared to the Gamblers' 21.
Small things led to big problems for the Aviators. "Whenever you go into the second half of a ball game, you know, you can't have a missed field goal, you can't have a turnover, you can't get that back," Ginn Jr. explained.
Credit the Gamblers' defense for making stops when needed, especially in the third and fourth quarters. "When you create negative yardage plays, it's amazing how much your defense gets better," said Kevin Sumlin, Head Coach, Houston Gamblers.
This game was about missed opportunities, which seems to be the story for the Aviators' season.
The Houston Gamblers improve to 2-3 and are not completely out of the playoff race with five regular-season games remaining. They will meet for the second time in five days as they travel to Columbus for a back-to-back game.
This season, the Aviators are 1-1 in back-to-back games as they will play another back-to-back in weeks 8 and 9 against the Birmingham Stallions.
They fall to 1-4 on the season and will prepare to host Houston on Friday at Historic Crew Stadium.
