CANTON, Ohio — Following an extensive search process with a strong pool of candidates, Plain Local Schools is proud to announce Ryan McGonagle as the next Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach at GlenOak High School. McGonagle will officially begin in August.
McGonagle brings a proven track record of building successful, student-centered programs and a deep connection to Plain Local Schools. He currently serves as a physical education teacher at Glenwood Intermediate School, a role he has held since 2016. He also previously coached within the GlenOak program as both Head JV and Assistant Varsity Coach.
Most recently, McGonagle led East Canton High School’s varsity program, where he earned both IVC Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year honors during the 2023–2024 season after guiding his team to a 17-7 record. His leadership produced the program’s first consecutive winning seasons in over a decade and helped establish one of the state's top defensive teams.

Known for his focus on culture and development, McGonagle has built programs from the ground up, aligning youth, middle school, and high school levels. His efforts have included organizing youth camps, developing leadership structures for players, and creating consistent success both on and off the court.
“Ryan brings great energy, a strong commitment to students, and a deep knowledge of the game,” said GlenOak High School Principal Brett Niarchos. “He will be a great role model for our student-athletes, and we are excited to welcome him as the leader of our boys' basketball program.”
McGonagle expressed excitement about leading the Eagles.
“I’m incredibly honored, grateful, and excited to be named the next head boys basketball coach at GlenOak High School. I want to thank our district leadership and the Plain Local Schools Board of Education for this opportunity. I’d also like to thank my family for their continued support. Our focus will be on building championship habits on and off the court, while also developing a program rooted in relationships, character development, and competitive excellence.”
McGonagle holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Kent State University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University.
