COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The United Football League today unveiled the name and logo of its newest addition to the league - the Colorado Stampede - set to begin play in Spring 2027. The announcement was made at a launch party inside Weidner Field, the home of the Stampede, in front of thousands eager to become the First Charge of fans embracing their new professional spring football team.
From the foothills of Pikes Peak to the heart of Colorado Springs, the Stampede name embodies the independent spirit, resilience, and untamed power of Colorado. Inspired by the Plains Bison - an enduring symbol of strength, determination, and unyielding resilience - the Stampede captures a collective force that builds quietly beneath the surface before surging into view. It’s the rumble you feel in the ground before the herd arrives, the shared power of a region and its people ready to make their presence felt. Rooted in Colorado’s deep historical heritage and fueled by the energy of football, the name gives fans across the Pikes Peak region a rallying cry and a shared identity.
“The excitement in the Springs from the moment we announced a Colorado team has been palpable, and we’re incredibly excited to introduce the Colorado Stampede as the newest addition to the United Football League,” said UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon. “The Stampede name is rooted in the state’s rich heritage and the rugged, independent spirit of the Great Plains and western frontier. More than anything, the name represents power, grit, and an unstoppable force moving forward as one. Those are the same qualities we want this team to embody on the field - a physical, relentless group that plays with toughness and competes together for this fanbase. We can’t wait for this team to charge into Weidner Field for the first time on April 11 and show Colorado what it means to ride with the Stampede.”
The Stampede logo brings the strength of the herd to life. A bison at full charge with a bold “C” for Colorado on its brow leads the way, while the mountains of the Springs rise up from its mane. The horns are pointed up with a subtle “S” for the Springs hidden in the curve. The wordmark is forward-leaning like the logo, setting the unified direction of the team.
The expressive colors key into the region's landscape and history:
*Gold Rush forms the face and mane of the bison, honoring the historic Gold Rush that first brought a surge of dreamers west and giving a nod to the USFL’s Denver Gold team from the 1980s.
*Bison Brown sweeps back in streaks to represent the powerful herd and the earth they shake.
*Summit White forms the horns and top crest of the mane, representing the snow-capped peak of Tava ("Sun Mountain" or Pikes Peak).
Coach Rick Neuheisel will hold the reins for the team and bring with him roster pieces from his 2026 Dallas Renegades team. The base roster continuity provides an established foundation of players as the franchise begins building its presence in the region. Neuheisel will be returning to a state where he enjoyed fantastic coaching success, leading the University of Colorado Buffaloes to a 33-14 record from 1995-98, recording Cotton Bowl victories in his first two years, and finishing the 1996 season ranked No. 4 in the nation.
The Stampede roster will continue to take shape through UFL Showcase participants, free agents, and the 2027 UFL Draft, taking place in St. Louis on November 18. Colorado will have the 2nd overall pick in the First Round, and the 4th pick in the Second Round.
The team will play their home games at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, which, at 6,035 feet above sea level, sits more than 750 feet higher than Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, continuing the distinctive high-altitude home-field advantage Colorado is known for.
The arrival of the Colorado Stampede marks an exciting new chapter in the state’s rich football history. While Colorado’s professional football roots are anchored by the NFL’s Denver Broncos, and the region has demonstrated its intense appetite for football with the beloved Denver Gold of the original USFL, Colorado Springs continues to cultivate its own distinct football identity. Renowned for the elite collegiate and military tradition of the Air Force Academy Falcons playing at altitude, the Pikes Peak region has also supported various semi-pro and local indoor sports franchises over the decades. By establishing Weidner Field as their home turf, the Stampede will bring high-caliber professional spring football directly to Colorado Springs and a passionate and growing local fanbase.
The Stampede’s inaugural home game is set for Sunday, April 11, at 3 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on ABC.
