WESTERVILLE, Ohio--A longtime boys' head basketball coach is saying goodbye again. According to the Columbus Dispatch Preps, Ed Calo informed the athletic program that he would be stepping down.

Calo stepped down from his position in April 2022; however, he reconsidered his decision and made a comeback in July of the same year, which would signify the commencement of his 38th season as a coach.

"I came back in 2022, but events took place this past year that had nothing directly to do with wins and losses, circumstances that (I thought) it's just time to step away. Calo said. "It was a frustrating year, I'm taking some time off. We'll see what happens.

He graduated from Westerville South in 1975 and played for a few years before enrolling at Slippery Rock University.

Starting his coaching career in 1980, he initially worked as an assistant at Franklin Heights, subsequently at Grove City. Following a year as an assistant at Westerville South, he became the head coach.

He has a career record of 575-298 with 19 league titles, seven district championships, two state tournament appearances, and one state title.

"I don't know at this point because I love the game so much," he said. "I will help anybody that would want to be helped in the sense of mentoring or whatever the case may be, but as far as sitting on the bench with them, that would be a different story. There's only a handful of people that I would do that with."

He was inducted into the OCC Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Westerville South Hall of Fame in 1995 and is listed on the OHSAA website as one of Ohio's winningest coaches with a minimum of 500 wins.
