AKRON, Ohio - Marcus Wattley Sr. has returned home after being appointed as the new head football coach at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, succeeding former SVSM Alum Doran Grant, who stepped down following this past season, as stated in a press release from the school.
Wattley, a graduate of Copley High School in 2000, is returning for a second term with the Irish after having resigned in 2018, following two seasons in which he succeeded former head coach Dan Boarman.
"Marcus Wattley's leadership and football acumen are proven," said DaveVitatoe, President of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, "but it is his ability to develop his players and show care on and off the field that aligns with the family spirit of our mission and positions us for a sustainable, winning culture in the years ahead. We're excited to usher in this new era of STVM Football."
During his first tenure as Head Football Coach, he amassed a record of 20-6 and made the postseason both years, finishing as a state semifinalist in 2017, losing to Tri-Valley.
He was also an assistant from 2007-2015, contributing to the Irish winning back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013.
His coaching stops after being an assistant at his alma mater, Copley, with Boarman, included Akron University (Defensive Ends Coach and Academic Liaison), Canton McKinley High School (Head Coach) and most recently Hoban High School (Defensive Coordinator).
I am incredibly appreciative and excited to return to St. Vincent-St. Mary as Head Football Coach," - Marcus Wattley Sr. "Irish Pride' still runs deep here, and I'm eager to help write the next chapter of that tradition with our players and the entire Irish community. I truly believe in the direction and commitment of the school and what we can build together. Go Irish!"
