CLEVELAND, Ohio - St. Ignatius has a new leader. Tom Kaufman has been hired to be the next football head coach.
John Carroll is where he played and graduated with a bachelor's degree in English and a Master of Arts in Education from Heidelberg College after leaving Lake Catholic in 1999.
He is set to be the 24th head football coach of the prestigious high school program. This appointment follows what was considered a nationwide search, as stated by officials from St. Ignatius.
Kaufman's 20-plus-year coaching experience is notably extensive, primarily focused on the defensive aspect of the game and predominantly at the collegiate level throughout the majority of his coaching career, with his most recent position being at Marietta College.
His high school resume includes Gilmour Academy (2023-2024), where he led the team to an Elite Eight finish and a 12-win season in 2024, and his overall record for the two seasons stands at 21-5.
"What draws me so deeply to St. Ignatius is its commitment to forming young men of character, purpose, and service," said Kaufman.
Kaufmann added, "In every program I've led, our culture has been built on love, action, and connection, values that align closely with the Ignatian tradition of educating the whole person. When a team embraces those principles, growth follows on every level: athletically, academically, and as leaders in the community.
Adding to the newly appointed head coach job, he will also serve as the Assistant Athletic Director.
