AKRON, Ohio - As of December 19, the head girls' basketball coach, Isaac Williams of Firestone CLC, was placed on paid leave after an alleged altercation with a parent of one of his players following a basketball game.
As reported by the Akron Beacon Journal, Williams learned of his administrative leave following a phone call from Tod Wammes, the labor relations manager at Akron Public Schools. He was told he was being placed on paid leave while the incident was being investigated.
As of February 6, he has officially resigned his position as head girls' basketball coach:
According to multiple reports, the alleged incident occurred on Dec. 18 when a Firestone player punched an East player who threw a basketball at her face. Both student-athletes received technical fouls, and the Firestone player was ejected and suspended for four games, per the OHSAA rules for fighting.
The supposed clash with the parent took place after Firestone defeated Akron East in a City Series game, where they won 62-30.
The player's mother confronted Williams in his office about her daughter's four-game suspension, according to an Akron police report. The woman and Williams gave conflicting accounts to a school resource officer about the argument, which reportedly turned physical.
During the investigation, police decided neither party would be criminally charged for the incident.
"I am no longer the girls' head basketball coach at Firestone High School," said Williams in a Facebook post. "An incident that occurred on December 18, where I was assaulted by a parent, has resulted in suspension for the remainder of the season.
In an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, Williams maintains he was the victim in the altercation.
He had already missed the last nine games due to being placed on leave. As of February, they have just two more regular-season games left, with the postseason tournament beginning around February 21.
Reggie Floyd was named interim coach during the time period of the investigation and for the remainder of the season.
No comment was given from the other party in this incident as of press time.
