INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana -- Kelsey Mitchell is making waves in the WNBA; the ex-Cincinnati Princeton guard is one of the top players in the league this season.
As the first half of the season wraps up and the All-Star break approaches, it raises the question: could this be a league MVP year?
After winning two games in a row against the Seattle Storm and the New York Liberty, she's played solid basketball by scoring 30 or more points in both games, which not only set a franchise record but also marked a personal best in her 9-year WNBA career. Additionally, this season, she holds the record for the most consecutive games with double-digit scoring.
Following the victory against the New York Liberty, she ranks second in the league for scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game, just trailing the current league MVP A'ja Wilson, who averages 25.5 points per game. Also, she is currently second in the league in 3-point shots made, with 71.
Stephanie White's comments after the win over the New York Liberty:
"She loves to play," coach Stephanie White said. "She's always in the gym. She's always working on her game. I think one of the things with Kelsey is that she's learned how to play at different speeds. It keeps defenses off balance. She's become a better facilitator. Again, that keeps defenses off balance, but she's just somebody who can find multiple ways to score."
With one more game before the WNBA All-Star break, they will host the Connecticut Sun in hopes of winning their 17th game of the season.
Mitchell, along with Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, were voted All-Star starters for this year's WNBA All-Star Game.
"I think all of the success that I've had lately comes from my teammates," Mitchell said in the post-game press conference. "It comes from the organization across the board. I just think it's about chemistry. I want to see them win, and they want to see me win, so it's a good relationship to have."
Kelsey Mitchell's impressive performance in the first half of the season for the Indiana Fever highlights her growth as a player and her crucial role in the team's success. Her skills and determination not only elevate her game but also inspire her teammates, setting a promising tone for the rest of the season.
