AKRON, Ohio - The Firestone Falcons have appointed RayShaun Nevins as their new head football coach, following board approval June 9, according to Michael Beaven of the Akron Beacon Journal.
This is generally a late hire for a head coach, considering the season begins in a month. Reports indicate that the district voted 0-7 against hiring based on another recommendation, that being Michael Tucci, which may have delayed the hiring process.
He is stepping up in this position after serving as an assistant to his uncle who retired in February, former head coach Eric Mitchell, for the past six seasons.
"I love this opportunity," said Nevins. "I think this is a great opportunity for myself and the staff to be back here and coaching this group of guys. They are returning City Series champs along with East. and for them, the sky is the limit."
Nevins graduated from Garfield High School in 2013 and obtained his bachelor's degree in history from Theil College in 2017, playing on the offensive line and then coaching running backs and wide receivers.
He is reported to be the main signal caller for the Falcons at the start of the season, in addition to serving as a substitute teacher at Litchfield Community Learning Center - Middle School, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
Mitchell served as head coach for nine seasons at Firestone, achieving a record of 31 wins and 68 losses. During his tenure, he reached the postseason on four occasions, and last season, he shared the Akron City Series Championship with Akron East and was Co-Coach of the Year in 2023.
The Falcons start the football season on August 22 against Rocky River.
