CANTON, Ohio - The commencement of the 2025 NFL football season started with the annual preseason game, taking place at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, where the Los Angeles Chargers are facing off against the home team, the Detroit Lions.
Although we may not see many starting players in preseason games, examining the depth and identifying the players who can make the team is still worthwhile.
Trey Lance of North Dakota State, selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, started for the Chargers, completing five plays for a total of 28 yards. He connected with former Seattle Seahawks tight end Will Dissly for a 5-yard touchdown reception, followed by a point after, and they led 7-0.
Following several plays and obtaining possession of the ball after an unsuccessful conversion attempt by the Chargers, they would try a 52-yard field goal, which ultimately failed, while still leading 7-0.
8-year pro Kyle Allen would throw an interception to rookie Nikko Reed for a 60-yard return and an eventual score by Kimani Vidal on a 2-yard rushing touchdown with 5:13 left in the quarter to go up 14-0 and lead into the second quarter.

Detroit would soon get going with a long possession time of 9:29 on 15 plays for 60 yards, with 6-year veteran Craig Reynolds bringing them within a touchdown. Kyle Allen, at this point, has thrown for 85 yards on 8-for-12 and two interceptions.
Trey Lance tosses another touchdown pass at the 1:51 mark of the second quarter to rookie wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith to go up 21-7. With that touchdown, Lance has thrown for 97 yards on 9-for-12 passing and two touchdowns.
Chargers open up the half receiving the ball, going three and out, choosing to punt, Detroit's Keeny-James muffs the punt, and Chargers recover at their 5-yard line, and would settle for a field goal to take the lead up 24-7 with 12:31 left to play.
A pass from Trey Lance with 3:03 called incomplete but resulted in a field goal by kicker Cameron Dicker with a 27-yard field goal with 2:59 left to go up 27-7.
Third-year player Hendon Hooker replaces Kyle Allen at quarterback for the Detroit Lions, with Allen finishing the game 9 for 14 with 91 yards and two interceptions.

The Chargers were in full control as the preseason backup DJ Uiagalelei would enter the game, putting up one last score before the game would end, with Kimani scoring on a 2-yard rush with 3:42 left. He would end the game with 9 carries for 32 yards and two touchdowns.
That's all they needed to cap off a 34-7 victory on pro football's main stage.
With Trey Lance playing for close to three-quarters, Harbaugh stated, "Hadn't had a lot or enough game action, you know, um, I just wanted to, that was the game plan," he said during the post-game conference.
The upcoming game for the Chargers will take place at SoFi Stadium, where they will host the Saints on August 10.
