AKRON, Ohio - In a span of two weeks, two teams have called off a game due to safety concerns for their players. Just a week ago, Barberton cancelled its game due to an increasing number of injuries among its starting players, and now St. Vincent-St. Mary has followed suit.

As per a statement issued by the school administration, they are experiencing problems related to injuries and a bacterial skin infection:

"Dear SVSM Families, at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, the health, safety, and well-being of our student-athletes is always our highest priority," STSM administration said in a press release. "Over the course of the season, several players on our varsity football team have endured injuries, some of which are season-ending. On top of that, we recently learned that additional players have been impacted by a bacterial skin infection. The combination of injuries and illness has affected our roster and our ability to safely compete, creating an evolving, ongoing health and well-being situation."

The Irish were scheduled to play Harvest Preparatory School. As of press time, no attempt had been made to see if they would seek out another opponent due to these unforeseen circumstances.

Furthermore, St. Vincent-St. Mary consulted with the athletic training staff of Akron Children's Hospital prior to deciding to cancel, as stated in the press release.

Their team record stands at 0-6 thus far in the season, although we are entering week eight, because of the issues at Ursuline High School in week seven, that game was also cancelled.
