Dalys Jett, former Warren Harding football star, dies in altercation with police

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- A former star football player for Warren Harding High School was tragically killed after an officer-involved shooting.

As reported by WTHR 13 in Indianapolis, Dalys Jett, 21, from Warren, Ohio, was shot at the scene after he shot two officers from the IMPD during a call regarding a disturbance involving several individuals on the East Side of Indianapolis on July 22 at around 10:30 P.M.

According to the report, a 911 caller indicated that a man was allegedly carrying a firearm; upon the officers' arrival, they encountered a male and an unidentified female. The male was later identified as Jett. 

The male opened fire on the officers, prompting three officers to return fire, hitting Jett at least once, though the exact location of the fatal shot remained unreported. Officers who were struck by gunfire, along with Jett, were immediately provided with life-saving measures. 

One officer was taken to a local hospital by patrol car, while the other injured officer was taken by medics, and as of press time, they were listed in "stable" condition.

Jett was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

In an update today, IMPD said in a prepared statement:

"The IMPD officers shot in the line of duty last night remain in good spirits and are on the road to recovery. We are relieved to report that one officer has been released from the hospital. The second officer remains in stable condition at the hospital. Please keep these officers and everyone involved in this incident in your thoughts and prayers." 

Also, in the update, one of the officers was struck in the chest during the altercation, and the other officer's bulletproof vest saved him from more serious injury. 

There were also statements made by Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and the Indianapolis City Council Leadership on their concern for everybody involved in this tragic altercation. A standard use-of-force review is underway.
