Family of Dalys Jett shares statement on recent events

WARREN, Ohio -- The family of Dalys Jett is mourning after his encounter with officers from the Indianapolis Police Department in the late hours of July 22, which resulted in his death and injuries to two IMPD officers.

A statement was issued on behalf of Dalys Jett by community leader and pastor Davanta R. Scruggs of New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Kentucky:

"Our family is heartbroken by the death of Dalys Jett and remains focused on learning the full truth about the encounter that ended his life. We understand that two Indianapolis Metropolitan police department officers were reported injured, and we pray for their recovery, but we will not speculate about what occurred or accept any single account as conclusive while the investigation remains open and critical evidence has not been made public. We therefore call upon IMPD and the City of Indianapolis to release within seven days the complete body camera footage from every officer present, subject only to redactions strictly required by law, publicly identify every officer who discharged a weapon, and ensure that the use of deadly force is reviewed by an investigative agency independent of IMPD, with the appointment of an independent prosecutor when legally appropriate. These requests do not assign guilt or reach conclusions before the evidence is known. They seek a process that is transparent, impartial, and worthy of public confidence. Dalys cannot speak for himself, and our family will continue to pursue the truth while preserving every legal right and remedy available to us."
