COLUMBUS, Ohio--According to WCPO's Mike Dyer the Ohio High School Athletic Association is planning to make a decision on whether the number of regional football qualifiers will be changed for the upcoming season.
The current format has 16 in each of the 28 regions, but the number most believe will be reduced to 12 in each region.
Doug Ute told the OHSAA Media Advisory Committee that there is "serious discussion" about potentially reducing the number of playoff qualifiers from 16 to 12 teams.
In a regularly scheduled meeting of the OHSAA Board of Directors on June 13 in Akron, it was stated that this will be on the agenda.
During the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association yearly meeting on May 1, Beau Rugg stated, "12 playoff qualifiers in each region is a possible scenario for this upcoming season."
Noting that 12 team regional qualifiers would be a first in the history of the OHSAA Playoffs.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the regional qualifiers were the top 8 in each region since 1999. This changed in 2020 when the OHSAA announced that 12 teams per region would move forward, but it never happened. Due to the pandemic and its shortened season, every member school qualified for the playoffs.
In 2021, it was reduced to the current 16 team regional qualifiers.
