MEDINA, Ohio - Circumstances related to the cancellation of a week 7 Ohio High School Football game have prompted one school administrator to advocate for the removal of a team from the Suburban League.
As reported by the Akron Beacon Journal, Jonathan Bailey, the Athletic Director and Assistant Principal of Highland High School, is requesting the removal of Barberton from the Suburban League.
Two days before today, Barberton notified Highland of its decision to cancel the varsity football game scheduled for October 3, citing an increase in injuries among their starting players. They agreed to convene to explore options for ensuring the team can still participate, especially considering Highland's homecoming ceremonies and other events planned for that evening.
Barberton consented to amend the modifications and subsequently, later in the day, officially called off the entire game, as stated in a post from Highland Local School District.
Here is a statement issued by the Highland Athletic Department - Jonathan Bailey:
The Suburban League has always prided itself on its integrity, consistency, and commitment to providing fair opportunities for student-athletes. When a member school cancels a varsity event, it undermines that foundation. Such actions damage the credibility of our league, diminish the experience of our athletes, and create uncertainty for schools that are upholding their obligations.Additionally, this sets a concerning precedent and exposes the league to liability issues. If a single member is allowed to cancel contests without appropriate consequences, it opens the door for future disruptions across multiple sports and seasons. This is not only unfair to the schools who meet their commitments, but also harmful to the reputation we have built as one of Ohio's most respected leagues. In light of these circumstances, I recommend that we take formal action to remove Barberton from the Suburban League. Doing so will reinforce our shared values, protect the integrity of our schedules, and maintain the high standards we expect of all member schools.I look forward to hearing your thoughts and working together to ensure the continued strength and credibility of the Suburban League.
Barberton has yet to respond to emails, and Highland has not found a replacement game for Friday as of press time. The school is planning a Homecoming Community Night Prep Rally and Fireworks Show, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday.
